At the beginning of 2020, Brenk Systemplanung GmbH was awarded a further contract to investigate the waste management (especially clearance) of residues from medical application of radiopharmaceuticals. The focus is particularly on radiopharmaceuticals with radionuclides whose half-lives are so long (in the range of 100 days and longer) that compliance with clearance levels cannot be achieved simply by extending the duration of decay storage. This project complements our previous work for producers and users of radiopharmaceuticals, in which we have, for example, derived clearance levels for special radionuclides (for which there is no clearance level in the German Radiation Protection Ordinance) or carried out individual case-by-case assessments for specific waste streams.
