Radwaste Disposal, Mining and Environmental Management

Today’s Business Area of Radwaste Disposal, Mining and Environmental Management was founded back in 1990 on the basis of a contract awarded by the former Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Reactor Safety (now: Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety) for technical consultancy and safety assessment of the remediation of the consequences of uranium mining by what is today Wismut GmbH in the former GDR. Further contracts were subsequently awarded by the competent ministries in Thuringia and Saxony. Brenk Systemplanung acted as main contractor and led a team of its own and further German and international experts.

The expertise in radiation protection, the remediation of mining sites, management of radioactive waste, NORM, long-term safety analyses and water licensing evaluations gained in around one and a half decades of drawing up some 1,000 expert reports and opinions and further consultancy and research services for the above ministries has led over the past nearly 30 years to further projects on a national and international level in the fields of disposal of radioactive waste, mining and NORM. Organisationally, this expertise is today brought together in the three Business Fields Radwaste Disposal, Mining and Environmental Management. NORM, with its interdisciplinary nature, is now a dedicated Business Field in the Dismantling, Radiation Protection Measurements and Software Systems Business Area.
