Radwaste Disposal, Mining and Environmental Management

Today’s Business Area of Radwaste Disposal, Mining and Environmental Management was founded back in 1990 on the basis of a contract awarded by the former Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Reactor Safety (now: Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety) for technical consultancy and safety assessment of the remediation of the consequences of uranium mining by what is today Wismut GmbH in the former GDR. Further contracts were subsequently awarded by the competent ministries in Thuringia and Saxony. Brenk Systemplanung acted as main contractor and led a team of its own and further German and international experts.

Over the course of around a decade and a half, we have built up extensive expertise through the preparation of over 1,000 expert reports, expert opinions and other consultancy and research services for the aforementioned ministries. These cover the fields of radiation protection, remediation of mining sites, radioactive waste disposal, NORM, long-term safety analyses and assessments under water law. Consequently, over the past 30 years, we have been able to carry out further projects at national and international level in the fields of radioactive waste disposal, mining, geosciences and NORM.

From an organisational perspective, we now pool our expertise within the Radwaste  Disposal, Mining and Environmental Management division. The cross-cutting topic of NORM is now housed within a dedicated business unit in Digitalisation, Applied Radiation Protection and NORM division.
