Radiation Protection, Nuclear Engineering and Decommissioning

Jobs relating to radiation protection, nuclear engineering and the decommissioning of nuclear facilities have been the mainstay of our activities for almost four decades.

We have a comprehensive toolkit for all kinds of radiological evaluations, from determining facility-specific clearance levels and clearance procedures via the calculation of the activation of reactor pressure vessels, internals and the biological shield in nuclear power plants to exposure calculations for personnel working in radiation fields and incorporation estimates and our customers commission us to apply these methods in various nuclear facilities in Germany and abroad.

We complement these radiological evaluations as narrowly defined with our decades of experience in modelling the propagation of radionuclides in environmental media. We combine radiological evaluation methods with chemical, geological and hydrogeological methods to enable us to carry out demanding and complex safety evaluations for nuclear facilities, radiologically contaminated sites, intermediate storage facilities and repositories for radioactive waste and releases following hazardous incidents and accidents. Examples include an evaluation of the remediation of the contaminated sites of Wismut in Saxony and Thuringia, a radiological estimate of radioactive waste fallout in the exclusion zone around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, safety analyses for the Morsleben repository (ERAM) and the Asse II mine, as well as analyses of releases from nuclear facilities pursuant to § 47 of the German Radiation Protection Ordinance (StrlSchV) o.v. during normal operation and pursuant to §§ 49 and 50 StrlSchV o.v. in the event of accidents.

These evaluation methods are complemented by our own measurement devices which we use for on-site analyses and measurements and for in-house laboratory analysis of any samples taken.

Our expertise serves as the input for formal evaluations and expert reports, which we draw up for example in the context of nuclear licensing procedures. Our work furthermore forms the basis for various Radiation Protection Ordinance regulations: the clearance levels in Appendix III, Table 1 Radiation Protection Ordinance (StrlSchV), the list of NORM residues to be taken into account and the associated rules for exemption in Appendix XII StrlSchV and also the new exemption levels and clearance levels pursuant to Appendix VII, table A, part 1 of the fundamental EU standards of 2013 were originated by us or were calculated with significant input from our experts in the international committees.

The high esteem our experts are held in is also reflected in their appointment to Germany’s Nuclear Waste Management Commission (ESK) and the Commission on Radiological Protection (SSK) and their committees.
